IOTAF’s Financial Markets & Internship (FMI) Program is a specialized 2 month finance and trading training course that provides students and recent graduates with a competitive edge in their career search in the finance industry.
The program offers the type of real-world experience demanded by tier-one banks and top financial firms. In this unique mentorship program you will gain relevant career experience in a specific area of interest, whether it is quantitative finance, analysis and research, financial journalism or trading. It is taught live (i.e. not online) at our classroom and professional trading floor in the Old Port of Montreal by industry experts.
The program focuses on understanding macro fundamental analysis and central bank monetary policies and applying them to quantitative and qualitative modelings to help forecast financial market assets like stocks, bonds, commodities or forex currency pairings.
Divided into two sections, students will spend the first month in the class room learning theory and the second half on the trading floor in a rotational assignment program to gain relevant investment banking experience that will help prop. traders successful trade off their research and recommendation. Assignments include daily forecast and expectations, macro and central bank research, prop. trading and quantitative modelings and more.
Testimonials
The FMI program offered by IOTAF was a highly educational look into the movement of financial markets, combining practical lecture experience with hands-on mentoring and training by extremely knowledgeable professionals. My experience at IOTAF was instrumental in being hired at a summer internship with a prominent investment research firm– the connections, preparation, and practical knowledge that is gained from the FMI program is incredibly useful either for job applications or personal trading in the financial markets. The skills that I learned through the program were crucial in connecting me with an employer in the finance industry over the summer; the program was instrumental in preparing me for the interview process and support was given along the way to ensure that everything was up to par. The instructors are very knowledgeable and were very willing and able to explain any concepts to the students. Overall, I would definitely recommend this program to anybody either interested in finance looking for an edge-up in interviews or to figure out if the field of finance is for you.

The FMI program is literally the best complementary course for those who were taught in university. It brings the theories we learnt in finance and economics to the real world. We also got chances here at IOTAF to expereince the real trading floor with professional traders and participate in research desk work. Thanks IOTAF for the knowledge and experience
-Tao Liu, McGill Finance Student, FMI Graduate of 2016
The FMI program was really one of the best decisions I’ve made, prior to the program I had no idea what the capital markets were or how they worked. Coming from a non-financial background, I was still able to benefit greatly from the educational and hands-on experience this program provides. With great instructors and the opportunity to produce actual reports, I now understand the markets and what drives the markets to move. Using my experience from this program, I was able to secure a Summer Analyst position in Sales & Trading with one of the top five banks in Canada, a company I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interview with had it not been for this program. Needless to say, this program was definitely worth the investment and would highly recommend anyone else looking to gain knowledge and experience in the financial markets!

“FMI – the number one way to get a leg up in a highly competitive industry. Anyone that is studying finance knows that it’s not enough to simply graduate and expect a job. Finding success as a finance student means that summer break is no longer a break, but three to four months of working as hard as you can to get as much experience as possible so that you can stand out in a stack of five thousand resumés.
Enter FMI: an opportunity for students to get that crucial first piece of experience. I must have sent out well over one hundred internship applications prior to discovering IOTAF. I signed up for the FMI, I worked hard, put in more hours than I can count, woke up at 5AM, and had it all pay off when I was hired for the intern position. The crazy thing is that as soon as I had that name and piece of experience on my CV I was also hired for two university level research assistant positions. If you are a student looking to gain a HUGE advantage over everyone else, then this is the program for you”
